Our Current Standing
This list is regularly updated by Worldometer, an independent US-based team of international developers, researchers, and volunteers. According to their findings, the Philippines has overtaken Pakistan’s statistics and is poised to outrank Turkey and Italy in a few days. At the moment, the Philippines also holds the record for having the most number of COVID-19 cases in Southeast Asia.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire clarified during the press briefing last Oct. 2 that this ranking is based on cumulative quantity of diagnosed individuals since the pandemic started.She asserted that it is more important to keep track of the current active cases, saying that “when we look at the data, we should also look at the number of active cases. How many have recovered? How many have died?”
She pointed out that our healthcare system has seen great improvement in the recent months with recoveries now at 80%. Our fatality rate is lying low at less than 2%, lesser than the world average of 3%. Globally, we take the 86th ranking in terms of percentage of active cases against total cases worldwide. We’re also 3rd in Southeast Asia, below Myanmar and Indonesia.
