What Is Flurona and Should We Be Concerned?

Since the start of 2022, the Philippines has seen a massive increase in the number of COVID-19 infections, and with the colder temperature, more and more people are also getting sick because of the flu. What is Flurona?
Flurona is a term used to describe a person infected with both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time. In the cases wherein there is very high influenza and COVID activity, the chances of a person infected with both are very high.
The first-ever case of Flurona in Israel was recorded on the 4th of January 2022, an unvaccinated pregnant woman in her 30s.

How can you get Flurona?
Both COVID-19 and Influenza can be spread via infected droplets. These viruses utilize different receptors in your body meaning, you can get the flu and COVID-19 at the same time.

What are the symptoms of Flurona?
There are no new symptoms for both the flu and COVID-19. You can still experience the following COVID-19 (the Omicron variant symptoms are also included) symptoms such as:
– Fever or chills
– Cough or Sore Throat
– Fatigue
– Shortness of breath
– Body aches
– Headaches
– Loss of taste or smell
– Nausea
– Diarrhea
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, here are the different flu symptoms:
– Fever

– Runny or stuffy nose
– Body aches
– Headaches
– Fatigue
– Vomiting and diarrhea
 

How to treat Flurona?
There is no one cure for both viruses. Each virus has a specific treatment. Consult with your doctor about the possible treatments for Flurona.

How to prevent Flurona?
1. Get vaccinated:
Getting vaccinated is very important! Everyone must be vaccinated for both the COVID-19 and the flu. Vaccines assist the body’s immune system by defending against harmful diseases that can cause severe illnesses.
2. Get tested
If you have any of the symptoms for COVID-1 or have been exposed to others that have the COVID-19 virus. 9, it is advised to isolate yourself. Contact your local healthcare provider and get tested.
3. Wear Masks
Masks are still one of the best ways to protect yourself from both COVID-19 and the flu since both illnesses can be transmitted through droplets. Aside from protecting yourself, you are also protecting the people around you.
4. Follow proper healthcare protocols
These protocols include proper wearing of face masks, social distancing for at least 6 feet apart, and sanitizing your hands after touching high contact surfaces.
